Betway Canada has been added to Alberta’s list of regulated iGaming operating platforms, giving Super Group’s brand a provincial offering spanning sports betting and online casino games.

The Alberta iGaming Corporation added Betway on Sept. 28. The operating roster had grown to more than 30 active platforms, having launched with 22 sites when Alberta opened its regulated market on July 13.

As we reported in August, Betway had obtained an Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis registration but had not yet joined the regulated operating list. More than 50 platforms had started the licence-registration process in January, before the market’s launch, and Alberta had 27 private-sector competitors one month after opening.

AGLC regulates and oversees iGaming in the province, while the Alberta iGaming Corporation maintains the operating-platform list and handles commercial agreements with operators and suppliers. Before July, Play Alberta was the province’s only regulated online gambling site.

Betway joins a roster that includes FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, bet365 and Caesars. The brand already operated in Ontario, while another Super Group brand, Spin Casino, had been registered in Alberta through the group’s Cadtree subsidiary but was not yet listed as an operating platform.

Apollo Entertainment’s Golden Tiger Casino was added in the same Sept. 28 update. Stake, meanwhile, was reported to be close to receiving an Alberta licence but had not appeared on the operating-platform list.

Alberta became Canada’s second regulated iGaming jurisdiction after Ontario when it moved from a market dominated by Play Alberta and grey-market services to a private-operator model. About 70% of provincial iGaming activity was estimated to have occurred through grey-market operators before launch, and AiGC chief executive Dan Keene has set a goal of directing 75% of Alberta online wagering to approved operators within the market’s first two years.
