Betano was added at the last minute to Alberta’s list of licensed operator platforms, clearing Kaizen Gaming’s brand to enter the province’s regulated online gambling market as it opened on 13 July.
NEXT.io reported that the approval came as Alberta launched its private sports betting and iGaming regime. Before Betano was added, regulators had listed 49 approved platforms across 32 operators. The launch made Alberta the second Canadian province after Ontario to permit private-sector online sportsbooks and casino operators under a provincial framework.
Betano had already entered Canada through Ontario in late 2022. The brand had also built a presence in Brazil and Portugal.
The legal framework behind Alberta’s market was set in motion in spring 2025, when the legislature passed Bill 48. According to the Government of Alberta fact sheet, that law introduced the iGaming Alberta Act, amended the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act, created the Alberta iGaming Corporation to oversee market operations, and designated the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission as the regulator.
The fact sheet said further amendments to the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Regulation were published in January 2026 to define the processes and requirements for a private regulated market. Operators must register with AGLC and enter commercial agreements with AiGC before they can offer services to customers.
